Uganda Rwanda Gorilla Safari

Trip Summary

This 6 day safari takes you from Uganda to Rwanda to see the endangered mountain gorilla and other primates in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Parc National des Volcans.

Itinerary

Day 1: Kampala

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and transfer to Kampala. Overnight at Kampala Serena Hotel.

Day 2: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Depart from Kampala by road and head south-West to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. You will have a short stop at the Equator for an informative talk as well as a photographic opportunity. We will continue to Mbarara where we will stop for lunch. Your drive will take you through Uganda rolling green hills through the highlands, also known as the ‘Switzerland of Uganda’. Your road will then head even higher to where you can see the triangular peaks of the Virunga volcanoes of Rwanda and the Congo. We then drop down into a valley, to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Dinner and overnight at Nkuringo Gorilla Camp.

Day 3: Bwindi

After an early morning breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing before set off to the forest to see the gorillas. The ranger guides will take you through the forest, slashing at the undergrowth, parting thick creepers, to track gorillas. This trek can take from half an hour to five hours so a reasonable degree of fitness is required as well as a sturdy pair of walking shoes. It is amazing to think that there are only about 700 or so of these creatures left in the world! Then we will cross the Uganda-Rwanda border and head to Ruhengeri, Rwanda. Dinner and overnight at Gorilla Forest Camp.

Day 4: Golden Monkey Tracking

After breakfast, you will have a golden monkey track. These golden monkeys are the most endangered primates in the Volcanoes. You will be part of a select group of a maximum of 6 people, and the track will take most of the day. After the trek, return to the lodge for relaxation or a community walk. Dinner and overnight at Gorilla Forest Camp.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking at the Volcanoes

Early morning, you will enter the Gorilla sanctuary of Parc National des Volcans, the rain tropical forest covering the hills surrounding Virunga Volcanoes. The trekking is a demanding but rewarding experience. Ensure you bring with you enough water and the packed lunch. The time spent in the forest depends on the movements of the Gorillas in their natural environments. If you have the energy this afternoon, you will drive to Gisenyi, visit Ross Carr’s orphanage and Lake Kivu. Dinner and overnight at Lake Serena Hotel.

Day 6: Kigali (Departure)

After breakfast, we will depart to Kigali, go for a tour of the city including a visit to the market, pottery project, handicraft shops and the genocide memorial. Drop off at Kigali International Airport.
